Lake Butler was once a natural lake, where fishermen moored their boats in Guichen Bay in the summer and pulled them up over the dunes to moor in Lake Butler during the winter. A channel to the sea was cut in 1964, making Lake Butler available for safe mooring all year round.
The District Council of Robe is responsible for the care and control of Lake Butler, which is leased from TransportSA.
